The Field Note
In the latest Smarter Roofer Podcast episode, Elias Raber, Mervin Mullet, and I landed on a simple idea that stuck with me long after we stopped recording:
Giving isn’t something you do once in a while. It’s a posture.
We talked about how easy it is, especially this time of year, to associate “giving” with Christmas or special occasions. But real giving goes deeper than that. It shows up in how you lead, how you serve customers, how you walk into a room, and how people are left better than you found them.
Mervin put it in a way I really liked: "Are you a net positive? Is the world better this moment because you showed up, or are you consuming more than you’re contributing?"
That question applies everywhere: business, leadership, family, church, and community. And the consensus was clear: long-term succezz (and fulfillment) follows people who consistently give more than they take, without keeping track.
One line that really stuck with me was this: “Do the reps.”
Giving works like the gym. You don’t wait until you feel generous; you start acting generous, and over time, it changes who you are.
So, I want to practice what we talked about.
I’d like to gift you the last two Roofing Forecast interview recordings, featuring insights from 11 top commercial roofers and industry pros, where they share what they’re doing differently, what they see coming, and how they’re preparing for the year ahead.
There’s no charge on the recordings...
Instead, if this resonates with you, I’m asking you to make a donation to help Ernest & Laurie Schwartz drill and repair water wells (through their nonprofit) for orphans, widows, and the poor in Mozambique so they too can have clean water to drink.

Let’s be a net positive together.
Still a work in progress for me. But I’m convinced this mindset of giving first and serving consistently is one of the most reliable paths to both impact and growth.
If we don't chat before, have a super, super Christmas holiday!

The Business Lever
Make Sure Google Can Actually Read Your Website: One of the simplest (and most overlooked) advantages is making sure your website is actually indexable by Google. I regularly see solid roofing companies with good work, decent marketlng… (shout out to Raymond Troyer from Ohio, who I spoke with earlier today), and pages that Google can’t properly crawl or understand. That means fewer impressions, fewer clicks, and fewer leads no matter how nice the site looks.
A quick selfcheck: run your site through Screaming Frog (use the ‘no charge’ version). Look at each page and confirm four basics are in place:
Page is indexable (not blocked or canonicalized incorrectly)
Clear title tag that matches service and location
Single H1 that says what page is about, supported by logical H2s
Written meta description that encourages someone to tap
Why this matters: Google uses structure to understand relevance. When those basics are missing or broken, your site becomes harder to rank even if everything else is “right.” Fixing this doesn’t require more ads or content… just clarity. And, if you want me to check this on your site, just ask!
