THIS WEEK
On the recent road trip Erma and I took to Iowa, we listened to Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker.
He shared several powerful ideas but here's the punchline:
“Your blueprint for success is often written before you even know how to read it.”
In the book, Eker explains how many of our current habits in business—good or bad—aren’t random. They’re inherited. Not necessarily by DNA, but by observation and repetition.
Here's an example:
You might be really good at starting new things—whether that’s a new business, new product line, or new partnership. You love the energy of the launch.
But then you get bored…
Or distracted…
And without realizing it, you sabotage the momentum.
So what happens?
That new venture starts to struggle. Not because it wasn’t a good idea.
But because your internal wiring didn’t know what to do with consistency and stability.
I’ve seen this pattern with many commercial roofing contractors:
They’re bold starters but inconsistent finishers.
They crave freedom but resist structure.
They want long-term growth but chase short-term wins.
And the hardest part?
It’s usually not a skill problem. It’s a story problem.
You’re acting out a script that was written in your early years—by parents, mentors, or even tough life circumstances.
👉 Maybe you learned to hustle hard, but never learned how to rest.
👉 Maybe you saw people succeed, then lose it all—so you subconsciously fear growing too big.
👉 Maybe you were praised for hard work, but not for smart work—so you keep burning out.
So what do we do?
Instead of just grinding harder, reflect on these three questions:
Where am I seeing the same frustrating results over and over in my business?
Is this pattern something I saw growing up?
What would a new story look like—and who do I know that’s already living it?
When you find the pattern, you gain the power to rewrite it.
And that’s when your business starts compounding, not just cycling.
Same thing happens with people and money...
People and relationships...
People and...
Well, you get the idea.
Stay smart. Stay steady.
You were made for growth—not just survival.
